I've made a new build for 2.3.14 BETA.

The change log so far:

NEW FEATURES:
  1. Support for multiple monitors and super low resolution mode (640x480). Now you can use MCEBuddy on your TV screen and not lose the button at the bottom of the screen.
  2. Option in Conversion Task -> Expert Settings to configure conversion new tasks to top or bottom of queue
  3. Support to drag and drop folders onto the queue
  4. Option to filter based on show type (Movie or Shows) in the conversion task settings
  5. Option in Conversion Task Settings for automatically importing converted files into the iTunes library and Windows Media Player (WMP) library
  6. Option to Select the best soundtrack in Conversion Task -> Advanced Settings (enabled by default). When this option is selected MCEBuddy will let the encoder (ffmpeg or handbrake) choose the best audio track. Use this if you’re ending up with the wrong sound track after conversion. When selected this will only create a single audio track in the converted file. If you want ALL the audio tracks in the converted file then you need to uncheck this box. NOTE: If you want to keep all the audio tracks in the converted file will need to uncheck this box (multiple audio tracks only work with supported profiles like TS, WTV, MP4 and MKV).
  7. Support for parental rating in custom commands and custom file renaming, %rating%
  8. Support for manually specifying logon network credentials under Expert Settings for shared network files when adding using the Add button or dragging and dropping from a network share.
  9. Option to skip reprocessing videos that already have a converted file in the destination directory (only works for files added through a monitor task, ignored for files added manually to the conversion queue)
  10. Option to skip reconverting videos that have been converted in the past (based on history file and name of destination file)
  11. Support for forcing commercial segment joining tool CommercialMergeTool=ffmpeg/avidemux in profiles.conf
  12. Option under Conversion->Expert Settings to Skip copying original files. DO NOT USE UNLESS ABSOLUTELY SURE.
  13. Post movement of converted file to destination folder custom command (PostCustomCommand, refer to documentation for more details)
  14. Pre metadata extraction custom command (very start of the conversion process). Useful for using custom scripts to extract metadata for the recording from the databases/sources so that MCEBuddy can process it (e.g. writing a script to extract metadata for the recording from the DVBLink recording database into a XML file that can be processed by MCEBuddy). (PreMetaCustomCommand, refer to the documentation for more details)
  15. New profile for 3gp (h263) complaint video with CIF resolution for older smart phones
ENHANCEMENTS:
  1. Set of new Unprocessed profiles that are UBER FAST but don’t process the video other than removing the commercials and preserves the original quality.
  2. Custom built ffmpeg using stable code base with improved speed (upto 20% faster and improved AAC audio codecs quality)
  3. H264 remuxing speeds up by 80%. Now by default AllowH264CopyRemuxing is set to true. Comskip supports basic H264 commercial detection, consider using the Donator version of Comskip to speed up the commercial detection (http://www.kaashoek.com/comskip/)
  4. Forcing Series ID has been replaced with a NEW page that allows you to correct the Show title or force imdb/tvdb series id, you can add multiple rows to process multiple shows per conversion task or leave one row to apply to all shows. NOTE: Users currently using this feature will need to RE-ENTER the Force Series ID data after upgrading.
  5. Support for user resizeable “stretchy” windows for the main page
  6. Support for dynamic resizing of windows to avoid missing controls at low resolutions and while changing monitors/TV’s (second screen)
  7. Improved GUI status page layout, more intuitive. History button is now on status page
  8. Option to force recording type as Movie or TV Series in conversion expert settings to enhance downloading metadata from the internet for non WTV files
  9. Improved eMail notifications
  10. Improved metrics details
  11. Larger history (INI) file (about 45,000 sections, each section can have about 1500 entries)
  12. Improved metadata support for WTV and WMV files
  13. Updated comskip to 0.81.056
  14. Update MediaInfo to 0.7.64
  15. Upgraded AviDemux to 2.6.4
  16. MP4, MKV and M4V profiles now support multiple audio tracks by default
  17. Reduce CPU utilization while GUI is minimized
  18. Reenabled option to install ffdshow upon installed MCEBuddy (see below for fix for WTV files)
  19. Optimized frame references while encoding to speed up encoding for MP4, M4V, MKV, iPhone, iPad profiles. About 20%-30% faster now for high quality and normal profiles
  20. Now when MCEBuddy is outside scheduled conversion times it will PAUSE the conversion (in addition to not starting a new one) and will resume it when within conversion scheduled times. Also when switching back to A/C power it will check if it’s within scheduled conversion time before resuming
  21. Option to “one-time” manually resume conversion when auto paused outside conversion schedule
  22. Changed schedule start and stop times to AM/PM instead of military style time
  23. Updated ccextractor to 0.66
  24. Simplified conversion task user interface, new button for advanced settings
  25. Support for additional languages
  26. Ignore copy protection option has been moved to conversion task expert settings (instead of general expert settings). NOTE: You will need to reset the ignore copy protection setting after upgrading MCEBuddy
  27. CustomCommand now runs after renaming the converted file, BEFORE moving to the destination folder (while still in temp working folder). So now %convertedfile% will give the final file name and not the intermediary file name.
  28. Custom command with blank parameters
  29. Improved and more responsive ETA calculation for long conversions
  30. Increased the limit of maximum files in manual queue from ~800 to ~300,000
  31. Improved performance by reducing the number of network read and copy operations
  32. Added column for Converted File name and path in history window
  33. Flexible resizeable History and Event Log pages
  34. Support for ffmpeg -b:v format for bitrate definition in profiles
  35. Rename and move only option now renamed and independent to rename files options
  36. Extracting NFO metadata for all video types
  37. Support for DVD profiles (TS and VOB)
  38. Better mkv support (no remuxing from mp4 to mkv, direct encoding)
  39. Option to profile CopyLogFile=true to copy the comskip generated log file to the output directory
  40. Support to create chapter markers even if the commercials have been removed, the markers represent the end of a commercial scene
  41. Option to Embed subtitles and chapters under Conversion Task -> Expert Settings to explicitly enable to disable adding the subtitles and chapters to the converted file. Some older players don’t support embedded chapters and subtitles. This option needs to be enabled manually (even if you’re checking Commercial skip cut)
  42. Option in Conversion Task -> Expert Settings to disable writing metadata to the converted file (helps with some PS3 and older TV’s which have issues with embedded metadata)
  43. Support for extracting metadata from mkv
BUG FIXES:
  1. Major bugfix which could lead to no audio in the converted file or a remux failure (when 0 channel impaired audio track gets selected)
  2. Major bugfix (thanks to cmgj), High Profile and 2 pass ffmpeg profiles were not delivering “High Quality” due to a broken pass. Now actual significant improvement in High Quality profiles.
  3. Some conversions getting stuck forever while removing commercials and merging segments (AviDemux cannot handle merging very small video segments)
  4. Extracting Movie release year from WTV file when original broadcast date and time are not available
  5. All screens now auto adjust and create scrollbars if required
  6. Some audio and video corruption and sync issues, especially with H264 video and TS files
  7. WTV files created by MCEBuddy not being able to playback in WMP and MCE. (UnInstall Windows Update KB2670838)
  8. Not being able to access network shares set for Everyone access. MCEBuddy needs a username for accessing network shares for everyone / without passwords. By default this is now set to Guest.
  9. Uninstallation issue with timeout
  10. Changed H.264 level to 4.0 (instead of 4.1) to make MP4/MKV profiles compatible with a wider range of devices like Samsung and Roku
  11. Issue with reading FPS from encrypted streams
  12. Not sleeping while conversion if paused
  13. Issue where iTunes would show “Movies” as “Home Videos”
  14. Bug that would crash the monitor tasks when monitoring a remote network location after a resume from standy of if the network location went offline
  15. Prevent log overload by repetition
  16. Localization bug
  17. Issue in reading titles from filenames
  18. Hiding window on /startmin
  19. Handling corrupted TS files which caused broken output and loss of commercial removal sometimes
  20. Too many files in queue or history file causing GUI to crash
  21. Closed caption extraction
  22. Copying history and event logs to clipboard
  23. Accessibility, low resolution mode cutting off buttons and pages
  24. Commercial removal with empty or tiny cuts EDL file
  25. New monitor tasks added were not processed by conversion tasks if Select Monitor Locations was selected in Conversion Task -> Expert Settings and ALL monitor locations were selected
  26. Handling constant quality in profiles
  27. Reading metadata from MP4/M4V files
  28. Issue with firewall exception increasing CPU utilization on start, now configurable in Expert Settings
  29. Fixed errors with reading and creating MP4 and MKV files

10% to 20% faster encoding - profiles optimized
Aug 11, 2013 at 9:03 PM
Do any of the (new) profiles support doubling frame rate (also called "bob" deinterlacing in newest handbrake ) ?

I'm still on 2.12 version with custom ffmpeg profile which allows 1080i 25fps recordings to export to 1080 50p. This makes HD sporting events (Formula 1, Football ...) look exported as good/smooth as they do in WMC.

Option is invoked in ffmpeg via "-vf yadif=1:-1:0" or in handbrake "bob". In VLC filter is called Yadif x2
Coordinator
Aug 11, 2013 at 9:17 PM
yes with 2.3.14 handbrake support bob deinterlacing, you'll have to do some research to see how to write a profilet o use it.

Sep 2, 2013 at 6:08 AM
Excellent work with the new BETA! I am a huge fan of the new skip copying original files feature.

Unfortunately, I'm also effected by the WTV file playback issue with Windows 8. I am currently using the WTV Unprocessed profile with the custom rename option only to build the folder/file structure for use with Plex. The conversion task will also process/rename protected content which Plex is unable to play. Would it be possible to add an additional option that will detect whether the file is protected and if so exclude it from the renaming operation?
Coordinator
Sep 3, 2013 at 3:46 PM
This is a conundrum. Some folks wants to fail rename only if copy protected, others want to continue since it's a rename only option and they want to clean up the library while keeping all files including copy protect files.

To work around both, I've move the ignore copy protection option to the per conversion task expert settings. Now you can check this flag if you want to continue operations on a copy protected file (no matter what) and it's configurable by task.

It'll be ther ein the next build

Thank you very much. I'll be looking forward to renaming only my recorded TV that can be accessed anywhere. Out of curiosity, will this also enable creation of an EDL file for renamed shows?

No. EDL generation requires full processing which cannot be done for encrypted files.

  1. Ignore copy protection option has been moved to conversion task expert settings (instead of general expert settings). NOTE: Previous settings will not be carried over and will need to be reset when upgrading MCEBuddy
Could you clarify whether only the copy protection settings have to be reset or ALL settings will have to be redone when upgrading from a version older than this change?

Can we set mcebuddy up so that all tv shows have a higher priority over movies?
Coordinator
Sep 25, 2013 at 1:30 PM
a. Only copy protection settings, everything else will be carried over

I am wondering what was done for this "Fixed issue with small commercials (< 30 seconds) not being removed at the beginning of the video" ?
Coordinator
Oct 8, 2013 at 8:26 PM
The smallest commercial mcebuddy can remove is about 20 seconds due to mpeg4 GOP frame limitations. The bu was that if there was a video clip at the beginning of the video followed by a 20 second commercial or cut the whole thing would be ignored. Now that condition has been taken care of.

Oct 11, 2013 at 4:51 PM
I am wondering a few things are currently possible.

First, is there a way to keep the comskip log file that is created during the scanning process so it can be reviewed later for fine tuning custom comskip ini files? I have MCEBuddy logging set to Debug but it doesn't include all the comskip statistics.

The second thing is whether or not it is possible, or could be added as a feature in a future release, to add chapters to MKV (unprocessed) files using the cutpoints from comskip/EDL?

  1. Can you give me the name of the comskip log file? Is that something you can configure in the comskip.ini to put a log file in some other directory?
  2. It's already there, if you check Skip cutting video option under Expert Settings, it will add the chapter file to the MKV file automatically from the EDL file generated. Are you using the latest 2.3.14 BETA?

The comskip log file is created in the MCEBuddy temp folder, but then all the temp files are deleted when it is finished processing, so presently I have to monitor the process and when it gets to the final remuxing step I pause and copy the log file and the temp TS file to a different folder so that I can compare them to final output and make adjustments to the comskip.ini file. So really what I am looking for is a way to stop MCEBuddy from deleting the files in the temp folder. I checked the box to use the Recycle Bin hoping it would move the files there and I could restore the ones I needed, but that didn't work. The log file is named the same as the video file, only with a log extension. I haven't found any option to create a copy of the log file in another folder within comskip's settings.

If I use the skip cutting video option, my understanding is that it will not cut the commercials, but it will create the EDL and MKV chapters. I would like the best of both worlds. I would like it to BOTH cut the commercials AND add MKV chapters at the cut points.
Coordinator
Oct 11, 2013 at 6:13 PM
I'll fix it so that any files deleted would go to the recycle bin when the option is selected.

Let me look into the log files.

Your request for best both worlds doesn't make logical sense

If you cut the video when the chapter files are useless. So if you cut the first seconds then in the final video the first 30 seconds are missing. So putting a chapter marker at 30 seconds will just skip the program and not the commercial

Oct 11, 2013 at 6:21 PM
After I process the recordings with MCEBuddy they are loaded into my XBMC library. Since commerical breaks are generally placed at key places in a show (such as a major scene change or suspenseful moment), adding a chapter break at those points would give a DVD-like experience.

Oct 13, 2013 at 9:18 PM
I may have found a bug in the latest version. I was doing multiple runs on the same video file trying to tune the comskip ini file for a particular show, when I noticed it wasn't running any comskip passes. So I checked the temp folder when restarting an episode and found that it keeps restoring the EDL file that was created in the initial run, and of course the presence of an EDL file tells MCEBuddy not to run comskip. The two workarounds I found were to delete the EDL from the temp folder AFTER starting the process but BEFORE it gets to the comskip part, or rename the original video file. Where does MCEBuddy keep these files? I deleted the history file, log file, checked my AppData folder and I can't figure out where it is restoring the EDL file from.

Sorry, I actually tracked down the problem and it had to do with a seperate test I had done with comskip and the output_debugwindow that was causing the EDL to keep getting injected, so it had nothing to do with MCEBuddy. I apologize for posting before thoroughly checking everything.

Added an option to Select the best soundtrack in Conversion Task -> Advanced Settings (enabled by default). When this option is selected MCEBuddy will let the encoder (ffmpeg or handbrake) choose the best / audio track. This is useful if you’re ending up with the wrong sound track after conversion. When selected this will only create a single audio track in the converted file. If you want ALL the audio tracks in the converted file then you need to uncheck this box. NOTE: Users who want to keep all the audio tracks in the converted file will need to manually uncheck this box (multiple audio tracks only work with supported profiles like TS, WTV, MP4 and MKV).

So what functionality does the new custom build give us? Pardon me if I missed something obvious...just trying to determine if it's a build I want to upgrade to right away or not.

the special build essentially adds a MUCH better aac codec. It will make a significant difference to the audio quality if you're using aac (e.g. MP4 profile).
Plus it's been optimized slightly at runtime so you may see upto a 20% increase in encoding performance depending upon your processor.

With all your recent enhancements to the aac codec and speeds for high quality rips what is your recommended choice for shows being recorded...do you lean towards the mp4/aac 2 pass crowd, the mkv high quality with ac3 sound or another choice?
Coordinator
Oct 24, 2013 at 3:08 PM
Still your choice both are excellent

Mp4 has metadata embedded into the container, mkv does not.

Not a devices natively accept AAC. I prefer ac3 because if night mode but then again while mkv is more flexible as a container not devices playback mkv.

So really both are excellent it comes down to your need

WHOA - this is a good one, probably the best and most stable build we've made today. Check out today'd build.

BTW, brand new just off the block, brand new module for the best of interlace detection, MCEBuddy can detect interlaced, MBAFF, PAFF, Progressive and Telecined content and adjust the parameters to compensate for it. There by significantly improving picture quality without spending excessive time or ruining picture quality.

You will however need for now, enable it through a profile command. Add:
AutoDeinterlace=true

to you profile, Let me know how it goes.

I apologize if I'm missing something obvious but I added "AutoDeinterlace=true" to the profiles.conf under the MKV High Quality profile which is the one my tasks use however I can't find anything in the log files to indicate the setting was used. Am I not putting it in the right place?

you aren't using hte right build, this one doesn't support auto deinterlacing.

Please download the latest build and try it. BTW, in the latest build I've also added a UI option for the same.

Would there be any potential speed increases with the donator version of comskip due to steps that could be skipped in the mcebuddy process since it can read mp4 and wtv directly for marking of commercials? If so maybe a flag in the settings to specify we have the donator version?

I know the donator version of comskip itself is faster....just seeing if it could also speed up mcebuddy's workflow.

Yes it will definitely speed up the detection process for h264 video in 2.3.14.

Directly wtv will only help if you are doing slow remuxing without trimming or closed captions

All new added a command line version of the MCEBuddy service engine. You can now start a Command line (NOT WINDOWS SERVICE) from teh start menu. This will STOP the Windows Service MCEBuddy and instead start a command line version that you can stop using the escape key.
Useful if you don't want a service running in the background. You can permanently disable the windows service if you choose to do so.
